This was meant in part as an homage to the country-tinged psychedelia of The Monkees, with it's slight resemblance to "Tomorrow's Gonna Be Another Day" and it's lyrical reference to a "prairie dove" - a nod to Michael Nesmith's "prairie chicken."

There are also vocal hints of Stereolab, a strong influence when the song was initially written in 1996. The "what's puzzling me" lines are also a tongue-in-cheek wink at The Rolling Stones.

The lyrics reference other songs that appear earlier in the sequence of TMTY: "The Center of Gravity (Sink Right Down)" & "All Your Tongues." Both this song and "Displacing Disarray" share lyrical references to "becoming," but which one came first is uncertain.
